GIST: A tool for Global Ionospheric Tomography using GPS ground and LEO data and sources of opportunity with applications in instrument calibration

چکیده
Ionospheric tomography using GPS data has been reported in the literature and even the application to radar altimeter calibration was succesfully carried out in a recent work ( [1]). We here present a new software tool, called Global Ionospheric Stochastic Tomography software (GIST), and its powerful capability for ingesting GPS data from different sources (ground stations, receivers on board LEO for navigation and occultation purposes) and other data such as altimetry data to yield global maps with dense coverage and inherent calibration of the instruments. We show results obtained including 106 IGS ground stations, GPS/MET low rate occultation data, TOPEX/POSEIDON GPS data from the navigation antenna and NASA Radar Altimeter with the additional benefit of a direct estimation of the NRA bias. The possibility of ingesting different kinds of ionospheric data into the tomographic model suggest a way to accurately monitor the ionosphere with direct application to single frequency instrument calibration.

The ionosphere is about 60-1000 km above the earth’s surface, which is actually plasma of ionized gas of the upper atmosphere by solar radiation and high-energy particles from the Sun. The ionized electrons concentrations change with height above earth’s surface, location, time of the day, season, and amount of solar activity. The total electron content (TEC) and electron density profiles are t...

We show how it is possible to combine GPS/MET oc-cultation data with ground data collected from 100+ IGS stations to perform stochastic tomography of the ionospheric electron content with a 3D global grid of voxels extending up to 2000 km above the mean surface of the Earth, and thus produce temporal series of 3D images of the ionospheric electron content. A correlation functional approach that...

Measurements of the dual frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers can be used to calculate the electron density and the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere layer of the Earth atmosphere. TEC is a key parameter for investigating the ongoing spatial and temporal physical process of the ionosphere. For accurate estimation of TEC from GPS measurements, GPS satellites and GPS r...

In this paper, a new method of ionospheric tomography is developed and evaluated based on the neural networks (NN). This new method is named ITNN. In this method, wavelet neural network (WNN) with particle swarm optimization (PSO) training algorithm is used to solve some of the ionospheric tomography problems. The results of ITNN method are compared with the residual minimization training neura...

We compare TEC measurements from the NASA Radar Altimeter and DORIS instrument on board TOPEX/POSEIDON with GPS TEC estimates , and evaluate diierent GPS data analysis strategies. We verify that global tomographic GPS analysis using a voxel grid is well suited for ionospheric calibration of altimeters. We show that a 1-day t of 20-second-averaged NRA ionospheric correction data versus GPS tomog...
